10 Tips for Safely Driving a Luxury RV

Read on for ten tips to help you safely drive your luxury RV.

1. Mirror Adjustment

Being able to see behind you is a critical part of driving a luxury RV. When you attach your trailer, you will need to adjust your mirrors to account for the added length in the back. So, before you take off. Take the time to adjust your mirrors and always pull over to re-adjust if you need to.

2. Be Prepared For Emergencies

Being prepared for the worst is never a bad idea. For this reason, you should carry emergency equipment and take time to prepare for any possible emergency scenarios. Here are a few things to keep in mind.

Communicate

As soon as you recognize that you are in an emergency situation. Immediately get yourself to safety and contact the appropriate people to let them know about your emergency.

First, call 911 and alert them if anyone is hurt. Next, call people like insurance agents, warranty providers, roadside assistance, and any other type of assistance firm you may need.

Make Yourself Visible

Once help is on the way, you should make yourself visible to oncoming traffic. For this reason, you need to carry traffic cones, flares, or any other type of reflective object. Place them in front of your vehicle and make sure anyone that is standing outside is wearing a reflective vest.

Have Spares

Always bring spares. This mainly applies to tires, but it is a good idea to keep others like bearings, fuses, brake lights, etc…

For tires, be sure you have a spare tire and all of the equipment you need to change the tire if the need arises. This can include a jack for both the tow vehicle and the trailer and a wrench that works for both as well.

Have a Fire Extinguisher on Hand

Always bring a functional ABC-rated fire extinguisher with you on the road. You never know what might happen to you while driving across the county, so it is best to be prepared for anything and everything.

Pay Attention to Your Pets

If you have pets in the trailer, pay attention to them during emergency situations. Stressful situations can bring all types of pets anxiety and stress, causing them to do things that may be out of character. So, always keep an eye on them to make sure they don’t run away, or worse, out into the road.

3. Be Aware of the Weather

Whether it is a sunny day when you are getting ready to leave on your trip or clouds are looking gloomy, always check the weather and prepare accordingly. When traveling long distances, you will undoubtedly come across ugly weather. Sometimes it even sneaks up on you.

So, be prepared to throw your flashers on and drive slowly. If it gets extreme, simply stop and wait it out. Your safety is always more important than how fast you get to your destination.

4. Practice Safe Distance

RVs are considerably more heavy than the car you drive daily, meaning that you can’t treat it the same way you treat your regular car. You need to practice keeping a safe distance between yourself and the people in front of you.

A good rule of thumb is counting out a five-second distance between you and the car ahead of you. However, you may need to account for more distance if your trailer is especially heavy.

5. Know Your Size

During any given trip, you are likely to come across many different types of tunnels, overpasses, signs, and all sorts of low-hanging, or narrow, paths. So, be sure you know exactly what size your trailer is, giving you confidence that you will make it out the other side in one piece.

6. Eliminate Blind Spots When Possible

Adjusting your mirrors and driving at a consistent speed will help you eliminate as many blind spots as possible. While having mirrors in the right position will optimize your field of sight, driving at a consistent speed will help you be aware of cars that may enter and exit the blind spots that you will inevitably have.

7. Take Your Time

Take your time and drive slow. Again, your safety is way more important than shaving an hour or so off of your travel time.

8. Stay Alert

Taking long trips can lull you into a daze. Eventually, the road starts looking the same, the cars fade into the background, and you can become essentially asleep with your eyes open. Don’t let this happen. Take as many steps as you can to ensure that you are alert the entire time.

9. Keep to the Right

As a larger and slower vehicle, it is proper etiquette to stay in the right lane as often as possible. The only time you should be in the left lane is when you pass someone or let them onto the highway.

10. Be Courteous

Courtesy goes a long way when you are hauling a luxury travel trailer. Be sure to get over to let other travelers safely enter the highway from an onramp. Keep an eye out for all blinkers, and let people come through when you have the chance.
